When we moved to Raleigh I used the opportunity to simplify our stuff. Some of the first things to go were a cabinet full of vases. As much as I’d love to be the sort of woman who keeps fresh flowers in her home at all times, I do not love being the sort of woman who cleans cat barf every time green stuffs are eaten in the middle of the night, nor can I get over my own relatively frugal nature to keep the habit going. It didn’t make sense to make room for vases, so out they went.
Today my husband brought home a rose for me, since he’s a thoughtful sort of guy, but I was left standing in the middle of the kitchen with all the cupboards open wondering what the hell to do next. N looked over my shoulder and said, “How about the cocktail shaker? You can stick the stems in the holes in the top.”
I’d love to be the sort of woman who refuses something so genius because our cocktail shaker is so busy with its intended use, but I am also not ashamed to be the sort of woman who keeps a box of wine in the fridge for everyday drinking.
The rose didn’t end up being able to fit, so I didn’t use the top of the shaker, but it’s still a great idea for slimmer stems:
